Pets within the classroom environment promote an emotionally safe student learning environment and cultivate responsibility, teamwork, compassion and respect for differences as well as kindness.   They also have been used successfully for decreasing anxiety in potentially stressful situations and providing learning opportunities for interdisciplinary approaches that will aid with Next Generation Science Standards.
