Master of Science in Music Education learning outcomes
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Apply musical knowledge and skills to coursework
- Analyze issues in the field of music education from diverse perspectives
- Analyze school policies and practices through social, cultural, political, and historical lenses
- Evaluate teaching practices in music education from diverse perspectives
- Develop educational curricula that promote student learning in music education settings in relation to state/national standards
- Develop materials that address diverse and varied needs of PK-12 students
- Design assessments that provide valuable information about student learning and progress in music education settings

Music Education curriculum requirements
Planned program of study - 33 credits*
Foundations of education - 3 credits
Human growth and development - 6 credits
These course requirements may be met by taking an appropriate undergraduate course with a grade of at least a “B,” taken within the past five years. Professional education requirements
Content area core - 9 credits
Content area specialization - 8 credits
Field experience - 4 credits
Content literacy - 3 credits
Final degree requirement***
Requirements for state of Connecticut certification
- Survey Course of United States History 3 credit(s)
Additional coursework required for certification or endorsement
Note:
* The MS degree requires a minimum of 33 credits which does not include 6 credits of student teaching ** May be taken in 2 semesters (2 credits each) or one semester at 4 credits *** Students may choose to take the Praxis II exam as a final degree requirement for the teaching certification OR complete MSED 595 (thesis) if they are not seeking certification. |
