The Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program offered through the University of Bridgeport School of Nursing is designed for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing. This track incorporates the previous non-nursing bachelor’s level course education and experience and allows the student to earn a BSN degree in an accelerated time frame.
Admission to the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is highly competitive. In addition to the general requirements listed below, candidates are also expected to have completed a rigorous curriculum of general education, math, and science foundation coursework, as listed in the program prerequisites below, to be eligible to apply.
General admission requirements
- A conferred BS/BA degree from a fully accredited academic institution.
- Applicants must achieve a “C+” or better in all math and science courses (including but not limited to Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Chemistry, and Algebra).
- Minimum cumulative quality point ratio (QPR) of 3.00 from all institutions attended in order to apply to the ABSN program.
- Math and science coursework must be completed within seven years prior to applying to the ABSN program.
- All prerequisites must be completed prior to the start of the first day of the first semester. At the time of application, only 3 prerequisites may be outstanding or in progress.
Learning outcomes
ABSN program outcomes are statements that specify what students will know, be able to do, or be able to demonstrate when they have completed the nursing program.
- Integrate knowledge from nursing, a liberal education, human experience comprehension, scientific literacy, and analytical abilities for clinical judgment in the nursing profession globally. (Domain 1)
- Deliver safe, comprehensive, and compassionate nursing care across the lifespan to individuals and important others. (Domain 1, 2, 6, 9, 10)
- Advocate for the health and well-being of vulnerable populations, utilizing leading health indicators, education, health promotion strategies, and population-focused interventions.
- Engage in scholarly inquiry to deliver effective, innovative, and equitable patient care incorporating the values and preferences of the client and family.
- Integrate healthcare and professional quality improvement standards and principles to promote a culture of safety.
- Exhibit strong communication skills to foster therapeutic relationships in the healthcare setting, emphasizing the importance of interprofessional partnerships. (Domains 6, 8)
- Manage resources within complex healthcare systems to provide safe, quality, and equitable care to diverse populations, considering social determinants factors such as healthcare disparities and access to care. (Domain 3, 7)
- Utilize information and patient care technology to support innovative inquiry and facilitate evidence-based practice, contributing to improved patient outcomes. (Level 5, Domain 1, 4, 8)
- Cultivate a strong professional nursing identity by modeling the values, ethics, and legal standards of professional practice. (Domain 9, 10)
- Demonstrate leadership and management capacity and a commitment to personal health and well-being. (Domains 9,10)
Along with a solid foundation in nursing, graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN® Exam).
Graduation requirements
In order to graduate from the ABSN program, students must complete 61-64 credits in general education and 56-59 credits in nursing, totaling 120 credits.
