BIOL 411 - Advanced Forensic Biology 3 credit(s)
Prerequisite(s): BIOL211 or instructor’s permission This course introduces and explores the field of forensic biology by covering the major categories of analyses performed in the forensic biology division of forensic laboratories. It will cover mainly on forensic serology and forensic DNA analysis by presenting the underlying molecular methodology and theory, as well as techniques learned in the laboratory. It emphasizes the basic science and its application to forensic science to introduced graduate students to the language and standards of forensic biology, enabling students to become comfortable with their use while providing clear explanations of the principles of forensic analysis. The intent of the course is to provide biology Masters students with a preparation and background in the field, which could enable students to intern in, and eventually work in a forensic laboratory, medical examiners office and any public health or private facility providing forensic and clinical lab services. Graduate students are expected to have an advanced understanding of the material, and will carry out additional work in the form of case reviews and presentations of emerging methods.
