BIOL 311 - Forensic Biology 3 credit(s)
Prerequisite(s): BIOL211 or instructor’s permission This course introduces forensic biology by covering the major categories of analyses performed in the forensic biology division of forensic laboratories. Therefore, it focuses mainly on forensic serology and forensic DNA analysis. These techniques will also be learned in the laboratory, which includes several standard molecular protocols used for this application. It emphasizes the basic science and its application to forensic science in an effort to make the forensic concepts more understandable. Students are also introduced to the language and standards of forensic biology, enabling students to become comfortable with their use while providing clear explanations of the principles of forensic analysis. The intent of the course is to provide biology and health science students with a background in the field, enabling students to work in a forensic laboratory, medical examiners office and any public health or private facility providing forensic and clinical lab services. It is also recommended for students planning to advance to a professional biomedical field. Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer
