ENGL 298X - Writing for the Sciences 3 Credit(s)
Prerequisites: ENGL-101 ENGL 298 Writing for the Sciences stresses the relationship between clear, simple prose and thoughtful social analysis. This course aims to solidify analytical thinking and writing skills related to a variety of disciplines in the social sciences and related disciplines. In the class, students will learn how to examine and discuss social scientific literature and learn advanced aspects of synthesis, argumentative methods, and style development through the effective use of writing techniques such as sentence structure, paragraph construction, organizational methods. Students will engage in practical exercises in writing abstracts, summaries of academic works, reviews, conference presentations, essays, and annotated bibliographies. The focus lies on enhancing students’ awareness of the importance of the writing process in research work. In a workshop setting participants read and discuss each other’s texts against the background of recent theories about written academic discourse.
