This class looks at the major themes and eras of American filmmaking from the beginning of the sound and Hollywood’s “golden era” and “movie palaces” to the present when occasionaly theatrical and streaming releases occur simultaneously. Topics include; representations of race, class, and gender, the star system, genre, fan culture, and the historical and political contexts governing the development of Hollywood as a dominant economic and cultural force.
