GLDP 560 - Sustainable Development

Prerequisites: GLDP 511  or GLDP 528 .
This course examines challenges related to balancing the fulfillment of human needs with protecting the environment, taking into account economic, social, and ecological factors. Among topics discussed are global macrotrends, environmental actors (states, NGOs, etc.), international law, environmental regimes, natural resources, biodiversity, global political economy, alternative and renewable energy, climate change, petroleum, air pollution, hazardous chemicals, and wetlands. Case studies will be used to highlight the challenges faced by the development process due to the social, economic, and quality of life demands of growing populations in less developed countries vis-à-vis the need to preserve and maintain the environment and endangered ecosystems.
