The Human Nutrition program consists of foundational courses in human physiology and biochemistry which expand into in-depth learnings on macro and micronutrients, biochemical individuality, human development, functional assessment, and nutritional therapeutics. Mission Statement

The mission of the human nutrition program is to prepare graduates to excel as professionals in the healthcare industry, delivering nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy (MNT) by integrating an evidence-based functional approach with biochemical and physiological scientific knowledge to generate nutrition and lifestyle interventions that will promote optimal health of each individual.

Learning Outcomes

The UB Human Nutrition Institute graduates will:

Promote and support awareness of the benefits of optimal nutrition to health and overall well-being;
Integrate biochemical and physiological science knowledge with nutritional evidence-based interventions and competent decision-making to generate nutrition and lifestyle recommendations that will promote the optimal health of each individual;
Exhibit professional behavior that is ethical, collaborative and culturally sensitive;
Demonstrate the ability to successfully complete the UB comprehensive exam.

Degree Requirements

Degree candidates must complete the courses listed in the 44 credit curriculum with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (B average). All students are required to pass a comprehensive examination at the completion of all coursework in order to graduate. All degree requirements are to be completed within a five year period from start date of their first master’s course.

Additional Information

Nutrition and Chiropractic Dual Degree

The UB School of Chiropractic allows students to pursue the M.S. degree in Human Nutrition while working on the D.C degree. Students should apply in their fourth term of the chiropractic program. If accepted, they will be required to complete a total of 28 semester hours of required nutrition courses as specified in their admission letter.

• Personal Statement- Please discuss (in approximately 500 words) your specific interests and goals within the field of nutrition and your ability to thrive in a rigorous academic environment, including your strengths and potential challenges.

• Entry Point: Second term of Nutrition program- to complete your MS at the same time as your DC you must take courses in each of our terms (Fall, Spring, Summer) as outlined below, beginning in your 5th semester of chiropractic school.

Advanced Standing for PA Students

University of Bridgeport Physician Assistant students have the opportunity to earn advanced standing in the MS in Nutrition program for several PA courses. The required core courses in the Nutrition program will be taken after completion of PA program.

Eligibility

• Student must be in good academic standing and have a QPR of 2.75 or greater

• Completion of all coursework in PA program

• Apply to MS program during last semester of PA program coursework

Accelerated BS to MS Degree

The Human Nutrition Program offers an Accelerated Master’s Degree. The BS-MS Human Nutrition option is available for eligible UB undergraduate health science students with a concentration in nutrition. Students will be able to complete the course work* for both degrees within 5 years of their initial matriculation in the undergraduate health science program. Students in this program take the prerequisite courses for the MS in Human Nutrition program while working toward their bachelor’s, which will earn them nine credit hours of advanced standing in the MS program. Qualified students** will also take up to seven credit hours of graduate core curriculum courses during their senior undergraduate year. These seven credits will double-count as undergraduate electives and MS Human Nutrition graduate credits.

*All courses for both degrees can be completed in five years. Comprehensive exam must be taken 2-3 months after the completion of master’s course work as a requirement of earning the MS degree.
**To qualify for this accelerated program, the student must complete CHEM 113/114, HSCI 230, and BIOL 113/114 with a grade of B or better prior to their senior year and have completed 90 credits of undergraduate course work. Overall GPA must be 3.0 or better as the student enters their senior year.
